Abstract: Valparaiso, a central-southern region in Chile, has one of the highest rates of wildfire occurrence in the country. The constant threat of fires is mainly due to its highly flammable forest plantation, composed of 97.5% Pinus radiata and Eucalyptus globulus. Fuel moisture content is one of the most relevant parameters for studying fire spreading and risk, and can be estimated from the reflectance of leaves in the short wave infra-red (SWIR) range, not easily available in most vision-based sensors. Therefore, this work addresses the problem of estimating the water content of leaves from the two previously mentioned species, without any knowledge of their spectrum in the SWIR band. To this end, and for validation purposes, the reflectance of 90 leaves per species, at five dehydration stages, were taken between 350 nm and 2500 nm (full spectrum). Then, two machine-learning regressors were trained with 70% of the data set to determine the unknown reflectance, in the range 1000 nm-2500 nm. Results were validated with the remaining 30% of the data, achieving a root mean square error less than 9% in the spectrum estimation, and an error of 10% in spectral indices related to water content estimation. Abstract: Cokriging is the common method of spatial interpolation (best linear unbiased prediction) in multivariate geo-statistics. While best linear prediction has been well understood in univariate spatial statistics, the literature for the multivariate case has been elusive so far. The new challenges provided by modern spatial datasets, being typ-ically multivariate, call for a deeper study of cokriging. In particular, we deal with the problem of misspecified cokriging prediction within the framework of fixed domain asymptotics. Specifically, we provide conditions for equivalence of measures associated with multivariate Gaussian random fields, with index set in a compact set of a d-dimensional Euclidean space. Such conditions have been elusive for over about 50 years of spatial statistics. We then focus on the multivariate Matern and Generalized Wendland classes of matrix valued covariance functions, that have been very popular for having parameters that are crucial to spatial interpolation, and that control the mean square differentiability of the associated Gaussian process. We provide sufficient conditions, for equivalence of Gaussian measures, relying on the covariance parameters of these two classes. This enables to identify the parameters that are crucial to asymptotically equivalent interpolation in multivariate geostatistics. Our findings are then illustrated through simulation studies.

Faouzi, T., Porcu, E., Kondrashuk, I., & Bevilacqua, M. (2023). Convergence arguments to bridge cauchy and matern covariance functions. Stat. Pap., Early Access.
Abstract: The Matern and the Generalized Cauchy families of covariance functions have a prominent role in spatial statistics as well as in a wealth of statistical applications. The Matern family is crucial to index mean-square differentiability of the associated Gaussian random field; the Cauchy family is a decoupler of the fractal dimension and Hurst effect for Gaussian random fields that are not self-similar. Our effort is devoted to prove that a scale-dependent family of covariance functions, obtained as a reparameterization of the Generalized Cauchy family, converges to a particular case of the Matern family, providing a somewhat surprising bridge between covariance models with light tails and covariance models that allow for long memory effect.

Abstract: We report the discovery of TOI-4562b (TIC-349576261), a Jovian planet orbiting a young F7V-type star, younger than the Praesepe/Hyades clusters (< 700 Myr). This planet stands out because of its unusually long orbital period for transiting planets with known masses (Porb = 225.11781(- 0.00022) (+0.00025 )days) and because it has a substantial eccentricity (e = 0.76(- 0.02) (+0.02)). The location of TOI-4562 near the southern continuous viewing zone of TESS allowed observations throughout 25 sectors, enabling an unambiguous period measurement from TESS alone. Alongside the four available TESS transits, we performed follow-up photometry using the South African Astronomical Observatory node of the Las Cumbres Observatory and spectroscopy with the CHIRON spectrograph on the 1.5 m SMARTS telescope. We measure a radius of 1.118 (+0.013) (-0.014) R(J )and a mass of 2.30(-0.47)(+0.48)M(J) for TOI-4562b. The radius of the planet is consistent with contraction models describing the early evolution of the size of giant planets. We detect tentative transit timing variations at the similar to 20 minutes level from five transit events, favoring the presence of a companion that could explain the dynamical history of this system if confirmed by future follow-up observations. With its current orbital configuration, tidal timescales are too long for TOI-4562b to become a hot Jupiter via high eccentricity migration though it is not excluded that interactions with the possible companion could modify TOI4562b's eccentricity and trigger circularization. The characterization of more such young systems is essential to set constraints on models describing giant-planet evolution.

Jerez-Hanckes, C., & Pinto, J. (2022). Spectral Galerkin Method for Solving Helmholtz Boundary Integral Equations on Smooth Screens. IMA J. Numer. Anal., 42(4), 3571–3608.
Abstract: We solve first-kind Fredholm boundary integral equations arising from Helmholtz and Laplace problems on bounded, smooth screens in three dimensions with either Dirichlet or Neumann conditions. The proposed Galerkin-Bubnov methods take as discretization elements pushed-forward weighted azimuthal projections of standard spherical harmonics onto the unit disk. By exactly depicting edge singular behaviors we show that these spectral or high-order bases yield super-algebraic error convergence in the corresponding energy norms whenever the screen is an analytic deformation of the unit disk. Moreover, we provide a fully discrete analysis of the method, including quadrature rules, based on analytic extensions of the spectral basis to complex neighborhoods. Finally, we include numerical experiments to support our claims as well as appendices with computational details for treating the associated singular integrals.

Abstract: Planet formation imprints signatures on the physical structures of disks. In this paper, we present high-resolution (similar to 50 mas, 8 au) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of 1.3 mm dust continuum and CO line emission toward the disk around the M3.5 star 2MASSJ04124068+2438157. The dust disk consists of only two narrow rings at radial distances of 0 47 and 0 78 (similar to 70 and 116 au), with Gaussian sigma widths of 5.6 and 8.5 au, respectively. The width of the outer ring is smaller than the estimated pressure scale height by similar to 25%, suggesting dust trapping in a radial pressure bump. The dust disk size, set by the location of the outermost ring, is significantly larger (by 3 sigma) than other disks with similar millimeter luminosity, which can be explained by an early formation of local pressure bump to stop radial drift of millimeter dust grains. After considering the disk's physical structure and accretion properties, we prefer planet-disk interaction over dead zone or photoevaporation models to explain the observed dust disk morphology. We carry out high-contrast imaging at the L' band using Keck/NIRC2 to search for potential young planets, but do not identify any source above 5 sigma. Within the dust gap between the two rings, we reach a contrast level of similar to 7 mag, constraining the possible planet below similar to 2-4M(Jup). Analyses of the gap/ring properties suggest that an approximately Saturn-mass planet at similar to 90 au is likely responsible for the formation of the outer ring, which can potentially be revealed with JWST.

Abstract: We present a fast spectral Galerkin scheme for the discretization of boundary integral equations arising from two-dimensional Helmholtz transmission problems in multi-layered periodic structures or gratings. Employing suitably parametrized Fourier basis and excluding cut-off frequencies (also known as Rayleigh-Wood frequencies), we rigorously establish the well-posedness of both continuous and discrete problems, and prove super-algebraic error convergence rates for the proposed scheme. Through several numerical examples, we confirm our findings and show performances competitive to those attained via Nyström methods.

Abstract: We report the serendipitous discovery of an elliptical shell of CO associated with the faint stellar object SSTc2d J163134.1-240060 as part of the “Ophiuchus Disk Survey Employing ALMA” (ODISEA), a project aiming to study the entire population of protoplanetary disks in the Ophiuchus Molecular Cloud from 230 GHz continuum emission and (CO)-C-12 (J = 2-1), (CO)-C-13 (J = 2-1) and (CCO)-C-18 (J = 2-1) lines readable in Band 6. Remarkably, we detect a bright (CO)-C-12 elliptical shape emission of similar to 3 '' x 4 '' toward SSTc2d J163134.1-240060 without a 230 GHz continuum detection. Based on the observed near-IR spectrum taken with the Very Large Telescope (KMOS), the brightness of the source, its three-dimensional motion, and Galactic dynamic arguments, we conclude that the source is not a giant star in the distant background (>5-10 kpc) and is most likely to be a young brown dwarf in the Ophiuchus cloud, at a distance of just similar to 139 pc. This is the first report of quasi-spherical mass loss in a young brown dwarf. We suggest that the observed shell could be associated with a thermal pulse produced by the fusion of deuterium, which is not yet well understood, but for a substellar object is expected to occur during a short period of time at an age of a few Myr, in agreement with the ages of the objects in the region. Other more exotic scenarios, such as a merger with planetary companions, cannot be ruled out from the current observations.

Abstract: The delimitation of burned areas is an important step for the study of forest fires, and the use of satellite remote sensing allows a scalable methodology. Previous studies use a dNBR threshold to determine the presence of burned areas, but this threshold is affected by vegetation variability determined by the geography of the study area and land use coverage. For them, the difference in the normalized index of burned areas (dNBR) was used to study the mega fires that affected the central zone of Chile in the summer of 2017. An automated methodology was developed that, based on satellite images and polygons of the burned areas provided by the National Forestry Corporation of Chile (CONAF) generates a set of dNBR thresholds differentiated by administrative region and land use. The application of differentiated dNBR thresholds significantly improves the accuracy of the burnt area delimitation model, although it does not achieve satisfactory results for all land uses. This methodological advance will make it possible to improve the design and control of policies for the prevention, conservation and restoration of ecosystems affected by forest fires.

Abstract: Fuel moisture content (FMC) proved to be one of the most relevant parameters for controlling fire behavior and risk, particularly at the wildland-urban interface (WUI). Data relating FMC to spectral indexes for different species are an important requirement identified by the wildfire safety community. In Valparaiso, the WUI is mainly composed of Eucalyptus Globulus and Pinus Radiata-commonly found in Mediterranean WUI areas-which represent the 97.51% of the forests plantation inventory. In this work we study the spectral signature of these species under different levels of FMC. In particular, we analyze the behavior of the spectral reflectance per each species at five dehydration stages, obtaining eighteen spectral indexes related to water content and, for Eucalyptus Globulus, the area of each leave-associated with the water content-is also computed. As the main outcome of this research, we provide a validated linear regression model associated with each spectral index and the fuel moisture content and moisture loss, per each species studied.

Villacres, J., Fuentes, A., Reszka, P., & Cheein, F. A. (2021). Retrieval of Vegetation Indices Related to Leaf Water Content from a Single Index: A Case Study of Eucalyptus globulus (Labill.) and Pinus radiata (D. Don.). Plants-Basel, 10(4), 697.
Abstract: The vegetation indices derived from spectral reflectance have served as an indicator of vegetation's biophysical and biochemical parameters. Some of these indices are capable of characterizing more than one parameter at a time. This study examines the feasibility of retrieving several spectral vegetation indices from a single index under the assumption that all these indices are correlated with water content. The models used are based on a linear regression adjusted with least squares. The spectral signatures of Eucalyptus globulus and Pinus radiata, which constitute 97.5% of the forest plantation in Valparaiso region in Chile, have been used to test and validate the proposed approach. The linear models were fitted with an independent data set from which their performance was assessed. The results suggest that from the Leaf Water Index, other spectral indices can be recovered with a root mean square error up to 0.02, a bias of 1.12%, and a coefficient of determination of 0.77. The latter encourages using a sensor with discrete wavelengths instead of a continuum spectrum to estimate the forestry's essential parameters.
